The history of VSMU

Vitebsk State Medical Institute was established as a Hospital-Medical Institute according to the Resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic on November 1, 1934, it had in total 250 students at all the courses.

The first rector of the Institute was Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor Khazanov Moses Anisimovich, graduate of General Medicine Faculty of Bern University (Switzerland). Along with him 12 professors started their work, these professors were known both in the USSR and abroad as medical scientists: Petrov Nikolai Titovich, Morzon Vladimir Osipovich, Berenstein Felix Yacovlevich, Kogan Henoch Izrailevich, Feschenko Gregory Arkhipovich, Karpilov Gregory Khatskelevich, Furman A.S. graduates of the 1st and the 2nd Moscow Universities, Kirov Leningrad Military Medical Academy, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Kazan University, Kiev University and other higher educational establishments of the country. Professor Gurevich Pavel Markovich was appointed to be the first Dean, he was a graduate of Strasbourg University (Alsace - France). In 1938 the Hospital-Medical Institute was renamed to Vitebsk Medical Institute.

Seven classes of graduates-doctors graduated from the Institute up to 1941. The Great Patriotic War has stopped the development of the Institute for years. At the beginning of the war the Institute was evacuated to Chelyabinsk, then it was evacuated to Yaroslavl in 1943. Yaroslavl Medical Institute was established on the basis of Vitebsk Medical Institute. Some of the Institute employees went to Minsk in 1944 and participated in the reconstruction of Minsk Medical Institute. The Institute came back to native Vitebsk only in 1946. The Institute was headed by Savchenko Anisim Ivanovich, Deputy Minister of Health of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1946 up to 1950. Students scientific society of the Institute was created in 1948.

The graduate of the 1st Moscow Medical Institute, professor Bogdanovich Ivan Illarionovich was appointed to be the Rector of the Institute in 1951. Many well-known academicians and professors came from Moscow and Leningrad to work at the Institute in 1952 and 1953, they were Shapurov V.V., Weinberg S.B., Oleshkevich I.B., Goldman L.N., Ketiladze E.S., Yanchur N.M., Marcuse K.L., Maslov P.N., Shostak L.Ya., Sosnovik I.L. and many others. They have created powerful biomedical and clinical Schools of sciences during 10 years, these schools are still honored both in the native country and abroad.

The new main educational building of the Institute was ready in 1959. Pharmaceutical Faculty started to work in the same year, along with the existing General Medicine Faculty. Since 1961 the Institute was headed by professor Medvedeva Glafira Antonovna. Central Research Laboratory was established, hostels 3 and 4 were built in 1962. Associate professor Medvetsky Eugeni Nikandrovich was Rector of VSMI from 1965 to 1979. The 5th hostel was built and the construction of laboratorial-theoretical building of VSMI was started during these years. The Preparatory Training Course for applicants who want to be admitted to the Institute was established in 1974. From 1979 up to 1996 the Institute was headed by Sachek Mikhail Grigoryevich, professor, Honored Scientist of the BSSR. The new laboratorial-theoretical building with a total area of 14 thousand square meters was ready in 1981. Hostels 1 and 2 were built in 1986, sports complex and dining building were ready in 1987. Training of doctors and pharmacists for foreign countries took place starting from 1981. According to the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in 1984 the Institute was awarded the Order of Peoples Friendship for great services in training of personnel for practical healthcare, training of personnel for foreign countries and on account of the 50th anniversary. Faculty of Advanced Medical Training was established in 1984.

From 1997 up to 2005 the Institute was headed by Kosinets Alexander Nikolayevich. During this period the Institute has seen profound reformations. The following faculties were established: Overseas Students Training Faculty (in 1997), Faculty of Advanced Training and Personnel Development (in 1997), Faculty of Professional Orientation and Pre-university Education (in 1998), Stomatological Faculty (in 2001), Faculty of Advanced Training in Pedagogics and Psychology (in 2001). The new departments and courses of professional development were organized. Knowledge quality control system was developed and implemented. The system of medical education that is competitive at the world market of educational services was established. The electronic library with computer classrooms connected to the global information sources was created. Clinic of VSMU was established according to the Decree of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus on 10.03.2003.

The Institute has successfully passed the certification and accreditation to the status of higher educational university-type establishment and was modified to Vitebsk State Order of Peoples Friendship Medical University in 1998.

Since 2005 the University is headed by Deikalo Valery Petrovich. At present time VSMU has 7 faculties where more than 7,000 students and trainees are trained. The University has 63 departments, staffed by 56 Doctors of Sciences and 227 Candidates of Sciences including 44 professors and 171 associate professors. Since 2010 training for getting Master's degree is carried out at the University. The degrees awarded on the graduation from Vitebsk State Medical University are recognized by World Health Organization (WHO), Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG, Philadelphia, USA), Lithuanian Centre for Higher Education Quality Assessment (Lithuania), Ministry of Education and Higher Education of the Republic of Lebanon, Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS, Dallas, USA), Medical Councils of India, Sri Lanka, Ireland, etc.

The University carries out training of higher qualified scientific personnel. Many employees of the University were awarded the State Prizes and Awards: Francis Skarina Medal (the employees are Zanko S.N., Okorokov A.N., Podpalov V.P.), Medal "For Labor Deserts" (the employee is Shilenok V.N.), Honorary Degree "Honoured Science Worker of the Republic of Belarus" (the employee is Sachek M.G.), Honorary Certificate of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus (the employee is Krishtopov L.E.). The names of Sachek M.G., Zanko S.N., Semenov V.M., Adaskevich V.P., Kozlovski V.I., Novikov D.K., Novikova V.I., Konevalova N.Yu., Myadelets O.D., Zhebentyaev A.I., Gurina N.S., Alekseyenko Yu.V., Litvyakov A.M., Lud N.G., Krylov Yu.V., Pimanov S.I., Okorokov A.N. and many others are known throughout the world.

The morphological building was put into operation in 2010. It was the 30th anniversary of work of Overseas Students Training Faculty at Vitebsk State Medical University in November of 2011. At present time students from 29 countries of the world study at the university. The medical library of VSMU was put into operation in 2011. The two-sided student exchange projects on the basis of Departments of Pharmaceutical Faculties take place annually within a framework of Cooperation Agreement with Martsinkovski Poznan Medical University (the Republic of Poland), in these projects students get graduate education.

The authorities of VSMU have signed the Protocol of joint action on the establishment of VSMU branch in Sri-Lanka within a framework of collaboration with PATHE Academy (Sri-Lanka) in 2007. The Agreement for mutual cooperation with Gdansk Medical Academy (the Republic of Poland) was signed in 2008. The cooperation with Argentine University Maimonides has been established in 2009.

More than 14,000 physicians and more than 6,000 pharmacists graduated from the University. The University graduates are excellent organizers and leaders in the sphere of practical public healthcare, Heads of departments, Senior doctors at present time. Anischenko K.N., Stepanenko N.I., Orekhovski V.M., Kolbanov V.V., Romanenkov A.S. held senior positions in the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. Drobyshevskaya I.M. was the Minister of Health.

ovorushkin S.N. and Lektorov V.N. were Chairmen of the Healthcare Committees of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus. Kosinets A.N. was Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus (2005-2007), at present time he is Chairman of Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee. Derkach Yu.N. is Head of Department of Healthcare of Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee. All the Director Generals of unitary enterprises "Pharmacy" and the leaders in this field (Shalaeva M.G., Kupriyanov V.V., Gritsevich N.N., Sosonkina V.F., Godovalnikov G.V., Reutsky L.A., Kiseleva S.N., Filipenko Z.A., Ustyugova S.K.) are our graduates. Rector of Gomel Medical University Lyzikov A.N. is a graduate of VSMU. At present time in the Russian Federation there are five generals who are our graduates. Main Military Medical Directorate of the Russian Federation is headed by Colonel-General Chyzh I.M. Administration of Medical Service of Military establishment of the Republic of Belarus is headed by our graduate Colonel Bogdanov L.A., Central Military Hospital is headed by Sawitski S.F.

According to the Decree of the President of the country Vitebsk State Order of Peoples Friendship Medical University was awarded Honorary State Banner of the Republic of Belarus in 2009 for the outstanding achievements in the socio-cultural sphere and a great contribution to the development of the health care system by means of preparing of physicians, pharmaceutists and scientific personnel.

According to the decision of Regional Executive Committee - 226 dated 07.04.2010 EE "Vitebsk State Order of Peoples Friendship Medical University" was put on the Vitebsk region Honours Board as the winner of the competition among educational and scientific establishments.

The University helps in the realization of "Project of health promotion in Vitebsk region" in conjunction with Department of Healthcare of Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee.

Educational programs on speciality "General Medicine"

The number of students studying at General MedicineFaculty of VSMU increased to more than 3,000 students in the recent years, almost 30% of them receive medical degree on a paid basis.

Students study at 8 departments of General Medicine Faculty and 32 universitywide departments. They are taught by 45 Doctors of Sciences (including 36 professors), 190 Candidates of Medical Sciences (including 126 associate professors) and 212 degreeless teachers.

At General Medicine Faculty of VSMU there are educational research schools directed by professors A.N. Kosinets, V.P. Deikalo, N.Yu. Konevalova, V.M. Semenov, M.G. Sachek, D.K. Novikov, I.I. Burak, V.I. Kozlowski, S.N. Zanko, V.N. Shilenok, A.M. Litvyakov, I.I. Generalov, T.I. Dmitrachenko, O.D. Myadelets, V.P. Adaskevich, A.N. Schupakova, I.V. Gorodetskaya, V.S. Glushanko, N.G. Lud, V.I. Morhat and others, their names are well known in the Republic of Belarus.

Almost all the teachers of General Medicine Faculty take active part in the work of the laboratory of innovative pedagogics of VSMU, the main objective of the laboratory is the introduction and usage of modern educational technologies in the academic process.

Thanks to high qualification of the teachers of General Medicine Faculty students receive advanced medical education, it allows them to represent our university honorably throughout the Earth. Training at the faculty lasts 6 years including the 6th course at the Pre-Graduate Internship: medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology and emergency medicine, pediatrics.

Students of the first and the second courses study natural sciences, life sciences, humanities and social sciences, students of the third course stud general professional disciplines. The fourth, the fifth, and the sixth year students study at the departments that are located in the clinical healthcare institutions, it allows them to acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills in their speciality.

Rating system of assessing students functions at all the departments of General Medicine Faculty, it allows to make objective assessment of students knowledge and skills, to raise motivation of their cognitive activity to mastering educational programs, to bring in the process of learning element of competitiveness, to reduce the number of groundless absences.

Besides electronic student card and electronic record book every student gets "Diary of practical skills records", the full list of practical skills that he/she has to master during all the years of training is indicated in this diary. A student acquire practical skills both at practical lessons and during duties at clinic, the duties begin from the 3rd course. Every summer students of General Medicine Faculty pass practical training as follows: after the 3rd course nursing practical training, after the 4th course doctor polyclinic practical training, after the 5th course doctor clinical practical training. During practical training students have the possibility to apply their medical knowledge directly in clinic.

Scientific study groups of VSMU give the students opportunity to deepen their knowledge on the subjects they are interested in. Research work of students is guided by the teaching staff of the departments and by graduate students. The best members of scientific study groups are admitted to Master's degree programmes after graduation from the University on condition of the recommendation of the Council of the University. Elective courses that are developed with due consideration of the latest achievements of science, the newest literature and new education methods help to deepen and broaden the knowledge of students. Usually the teaching staff plans about 30 elective courses for a academic year such as "Clinical biochemistry", "Clinical Physiology", "Theoretical and methodological foundations of Manual Therapy", " Selected problems of Cardiology", "Demonstrative Medicine", " Ultrasound Diagnosis of diseases of internal organs" and others.

At General Medicine Faculty there are groups that study foreign language in enhanced way, students are admitted to these groups on the decision of the foreign language department. Students of these groups take part in the international exchange of students. At present students of General Medicine Faculty serve internships at the leading medical institutions of Germany.

After graduation students are distributed to workspaces on the basis of their rating during all the years of training, the average mark is calculated on the bases of the results of all the examinations from the 1st course up to the 6th course inclusively, participation in public life of the University and in the students scientific society are also taken into account. During the first year of work graduates are guided by experienced physicians, they work as internship doctors it means that in fact they are still continuing their training. During the internship they can master profoundly the chosen specialty of physician, pediatrician, surgeon, obstetrician-gynecologist, anaesthetist, ophthalmologist, neurologist, etc. Doctor must study during all the lifetime.
